The world is quite an amazing place. Good or bad, you cannot go a day without seeing something that you can’t help but to notice. We are in the New York area so we see it a bit more than normal but sometimes, we see something that begs the question, “what were they smoking?”.
Today we examine one such example. Growing a square watermelon. Yes, you read right, growing a square watermelon. Seriously? We will be the first to admit that we have had my fair share of strange ideas but this seems just plain funny and, well, a bit strange.
So in a nutshell, you grow a watermelon just like normal. Then, when it gets a bit bigger, you place it in a box. The box is securely built to retain its “square” properties and the watermelon simply grows to its shape. In the end, you have a square watermelon. The image at the front of this post was taken without permission from the site we link to below to show you step-by-step instructions on how to do this yourself.
Although we have no official plan in place, we think that perhaps a watermelon growing competition should be in the works. Actually, the site (and several more around the web by the way we found) says that other fruits or vegetables can also should be able to be grown into shapes. WOW! Some folks really have a lot of time on their hands. Perhaps in the downturned economy we will see more shaped vegetables.
If you have a fruit or vegetable that you have lovingly crafted into a particular shape, please, please, send it along. We can’t wait to see that.
