Hard to believe but it is that time again. Time to migrate to a designated family member’s house and spend the day with them. Listening to endless stories from crazy uncle Eddie or hearing about the conquests of the over-achieving cousin everyone seems to have. Yaddah, yaddah, it is all pretty much the same from year to year.
In the midst of stuffing your face with, well, stuffing we can suggest a few things that may help make this year’s feast a bit different.
First, while you are stuffing your face, someone else is not. Many folks go hungry every day but folks seem to be a bit more generous around holidays so suggest a can food donation from family members. Throw the bounty in the back of your car and head on over to the nearby shelter or charitable organization and drop it off. Do so with a huge smile on your face and see how thrilled they are to see you stopping by.
This meal generates a ton of trash as you might already know. Be mindful of what you can do without and leave it out. Recycle what you can like the cans of stock, leftover plastic margarine containers, whatever you can. Just be mindful of what you can do, that’s all.
Food can go a long way too. Instead of throwing that bird carcass out, make soup. Stretches that bird just a bit more and helps reduce what is being thrown out just because. Plus, who doesn’t like soup anyway?
Our lives are filled with little actions that can add up to a whole lot if we all just did a bit each time. This small posting is way too short to be considered a comprehensive guide to making Thanksgiving a bit more socio and eco friendly (hmmm, sounds like a good article for next time doesn’t it?) but the general point is that we should start thinking of the every day in a broader sense. You would be surprised at what you might find out.
